We’ve all heard the saying about breakfast being the most important meal of the day, but why? A healthy breakfast can kickstart your metabolism and provide your body with the necessary energy to function and help you stay full and alert in the morning. 

There are also studies that suggest having a well-balanced breakfast can also improve one’s brain function and contribute to having better mood, productivity, blood sugar control and improved heart health when compared to those who opt out of breakfast.

However, many people (even those outside of the fitness community) tend to enjoy a protein shake because of the flavor offerings, availability and convenience such as in the form of a premade drink, and the attractive health benefits since protein shakes can be tailored according to your diet and taste preferences and because protein itself is an essential macronutrient for all.

Protein shakes can be a great way to increase your protein intake, help repair muscle tissue and support overall weight loss and fitness goals. One serving of most protein shakes contain anywhere between 10 and 30 grams of protein, which usually comes from animal (whey protein) or plant sources. 

But are protein shakes a great meal replacement alternative given the amounts of protein in drinking a protein shake? It depends. When choosing a protein shake, there are a few things you’ll want to first consider.
