How To Choose Wedding Cake Flavors

The wedding cake is one of the highlights of your wedding day, and it’s a big part of wedding planning.

The wedding cake serves both as a decor because of its amazing cake design,  and as a dessert, obviously. So, you need to think about both aspects of it.

Every couple wants their wedding cake to not only look good but to taste good as well, since it’s such an important part of your big day.

However, when it comes to wedding planning, choosing a wedding cake flavor isn’t the easiest task. Why? Because there are tons of wedding cake flavors to choose from, there are tons of flavor combinations, and flavor profiles, so it’s a big decision. Many couples can’t choose the one that they love the most.

There are also a ton of frostings available, so there are even more things to decide on.

But, one of the most important things to remember is that the wedding cake flavor should be something both you and your partner like. It’s your big day after all!

So I’m sharing practical tips on how couples can choose their wedding cake flavors for one of the most important days of their lives.

How To Choose Wedding Cake Flavors

Let’s get into my best tips for choosing wedding cake flavors! These are some obvious and some unique tips, that I find work the best with people who can’t seem to choose their wedding flavors easily.

So, these tips should make things easier for you!

Which Flavors Exist

Before we start with the tips, let’s cover which flavors exist! There are definitely tons of flavors, flavor combinations, and flavor profiles, but these are my personal favorites, and some of the most popular ones!

Wedding cake flavors worth considering:

  • Chocolate cake - a classic, but it’s amazing

  • Vanilla cake - another classic, but it can be paired with other flavors

  • Vanilla buttercream

  • Almond cake - a less typical flavor, but so delicious and unique

  • Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting

  • Vanilla or chocolate cake with raspberry

  • Salted caramel - a unique and amazing flavor

  • Lemon cake - for those who like more acidic flavors

  • Pineapple cake - goes well with vanilla, and works great for summer weddings

  • Hazelnut cake

  • Cookie cake

  • Fruit cake

  • Pistachio cake

  • Walnut cake

  • Honey cake

NOW, let’s get into tips.

Decide On Your Wedding Style First

When you’re wedding planning, you’re so happy about everything, and it’s easy to get carried away, and start thinking about the most fun parts of your big day.

However, before you start deciding on wedding cake flavors, you need to know the wedding style first.

It can affect both the wedding cake flavor decision, and the cake design.

Rustic weddings go better with more traditional flavors, and rustic designs, while modern weddings can have some more daring flavors, and more modern and sleek designs.

Another thing to keep in mind is the time of the year when you’re getting married. Some fruit flavors work better with hot, summer weddings, while chocolate or vanilla work great for any day of the year!

Call Multiple Bakeries

This is so important. Different bakeries have different styles, skills, and prices.

You need to find one that works for the cake that you want for your big day.

So, since we’re in the social media age right now, find those bakeries online, and look at their designs. You can’t taste them via your screen, but at least you can see if you like the way they design cakes, and if they’ll be able to do the design you envisioned.

Then, call at least 3 bakeries, ask which flavors they offer, and what are their prices.

So, you can use all of that info to come up with a decision you’re happy with!

Choose A Flavor You And Your Future Spouse Love

Yes, I know you won’t be the only ones eating it. However, it’s your day, and you deserve to have the most amazing cake that the two of you love.

While you definitely want to make your guests happy and satisfied, it’s important to remind yourself that this is your day, and you’re not selfish if you put yourself first.

So, when choosing cake flavors, agree on which flavors, flavor combinations, and flavor profiles both of you like the most! It’s impossible to find a flavor that every single guest loves the most anyway!

Choose Flavors That Complement Each Other

It’s absolutely crucial that if your cake has more than one flavor, those flavors need to complement each other.

You can’t have your cake not taste good!

If you don’t know which flavors don’t go well together, ask the bakery for some advice. They probably even have some usual flavors and flavor combinations, and even if not, they will know if something will taste good or not.

Vanilla is one of the easier flavors to pair, since it goes with basically everything - it goes well with chocolate, caramel, all kinds of fruit, etc.

Another one that should be easy to pair is chocolate. It goes amazing with red fruit - raspberries, strawberries, etc., it goes well with vanilla, with nuts - walnuts, hazelnuts, etc.

So, if you go with one of the “easier” options for pairing, vanilla or chocolate, you will probably find the flavors easily.

But if you want something different, do a bit of research, which fruits go together, what goes with caramel, what goes with each kind of a nut, etc.

Whichever one you choose, the flavors need to complement each other, and not fight with each other.

Have Fun With It

While wedding planning is super stressful for many people, it should actually be fun!

You want to have only the absolutely best memories from everything related to your big day, so there’s no point in letting it stress you out.

Have fun with the flavors. Set up a cake tasting with your bakery, try out different flavors and different flavor combinations, and have fun choosing the one you and your partner like the most.

Each part of your wedding planning should be fun and memorable. So, instead of creating a stressful memory, don’t let the cake flavor choosing cause you any problems. Choose whichever one is the best for you guys!

Think About Allergies

Something you should probably keep in mind is that some people have food allergies.

So, you should check if any of your guests have any allergies to nuts, fruit, or anything else that goes into a cake.

If there are some people that fall into those categories, you have two decisions: either change the flavor of the cake, or include special desserts for those people who won’t be able to get some cake.

Generally speaking, if there are a lot of people with the same allergy, it would probably be best to change the cake flavor, or to have two different cakes. However, if there’s only one person, or just a few, you can just order different desserts for those people, and keep your cake.

Consider Your Wedding Venue

Not all wedding venues are for all cakes. This is kind of related to the first tip I gave you, about deciding your wedding style. Your wedding venue should have the same style as your wedding cake.

Once you decide your wedding style, and you decide your wedding venue, the wedding flavor will be easier to choose, since you’ll essentially be matching the cake to the style of your wedding.
